Rounds in an AR-15
How many rounds will your AR-15 hold? That depends on what you use to hold them and feed the firearm.
When it comes to an AR-15, ammunition choices can vary (6.5 mm Grendel, 9 x 19 mm Parabellum, .22 LR, 7.62 x 39 mm, and shotgun calibers), but typically 5.56 x 45 mm NATO or .223 Remington are used. The feed system for an AR-15 offers a number of choices as well. These weapons are issued with 30-, 20-, 10-, and 5-round STANAG magazines.
The 5- or 10-round magazines are referred to as low capacity, while detachable 20- or 30-round staggered column box magazines allow the shooter to reload less frequently. To comply with legal restrictions, you may need to stick to the 5- or 10-round magazines. They’re also used for bench rest shooting and hunting.
