What Is an AR-10?

History

An engine airplane corporation – Armalite – originally founded the AR-10 in 1954. Two of the most recognized firearms today are the AR-10 and the AR-15. Armalite is today owned by the Strategic Armory Corps. They remain committed to customer service, product development, and firearms industry innovation.

The United States Army has used the AR-10 as well as NATO forces in Finland, India, Brazil, and West Germany. It, along with the AR-15, continues to be used by the military and law enforcement.

Some people think the AR in AR-10 and AR-15 stands for "automatic rifle." Others think it means "assault rifle.” They're both wrong. It simply refers to the company that made it – Armalite Rifle.

AR-10s by the Numbers – Including Calibers

Here are some numbers, facts, and figures where AR-10 rifles are concerned:

• Length – An AR-10’s average overall length will come in at around 40 to 50 inches.
• Fire rate – As fast you can pull the trigger, that's how fast you can shoot. Technically speaking, however, roughly 40 rounds in under a minute can be fired by an AR-10 in semi-automatic mode.
• Caliber – You will usually see a standard NATO 7.62mm round or a Winchester .308 round used in an AR-10. However, it was designed to be appropriate for many full-length cartridges. Alternative chamberings may include .338 Federal, 7mm-08 Remington, 6.5mm Creedmoor, .260 Remington, and .243 Winchester.
• Though heftier than an AR-15, the AR-10 is still considered lightweight, usually coming in at between 7 and 8 pounds.
• The original number of AR-10s initially produced was less than 10,000.
