What Are The Best Nonlethal Weapons For Self-Defense?
With concealed carry and other firearm laws constantly changing, you may be confused as to whether or not you can carry a gun legally. Even if it's legal, you might not feel comfortable carrying a firearm. You may be all for concealed carry but may feel more comfortable with one of the many nonlethal self-defense options available.
While it is your right to own a firearm (unless you are legally restricted from doing so – such as felons), if you feel even the least uncomfortable around guns but still want to protect yourself, the use of nonlethal weapons could be your best bet.
Flashlight
Naturally, we are not referring to a penlight here. The long, black, metal flashlight you see law enforcement carrying can be used to strike an attacker's legs, arms, collarbone, etc. Keep in mind, however, that if you use it to strike someone in the head or face, it could be considered lethal force.
Baton
Ages ago, a simple stick was the main weapon of self-defense. The baton is, more or less, a new and improved stick but a versatile tool, nonetheless. If you’re going to carry a baton, check on its legality and consider taking a course for baton self-defense techniques.
Keychain Knuckle Weapon, Kubotan and Tactical Pen
These little weapons are affordable, easy to carry and pack a lot into a little area. Your hands will be twice as powerful as long as you can strike out with one or both of them.
A Kubotan is similar to a tactical pen. Both are effective, simple to use, easy to carry, and lightweight. They fit nicely onto keychains, in pockets, and purses. With them, make your strike to the chest, face, or clavicle of your opponent. Keep in mind that if you use these weapons to strike the back of the head, top of the head, throat, or eyes, it might be considered lethal.
Stun Gun
For self-defense, the highly effective stun gun delivers a painful, powerful shock, is quickly deployed, and is easy to carry. The use of a stun gun is easy to understand but may not completely incapacitate someone and can't be used from a distance. They’re also affordable.
Pepper Spray
Pepper spray is preferable for many nonlethal self-defense aficionados, secondary to Tasers. Legal in most - if not all - states, it is easy to carry, can be used at a distance, and is simple to use. It relies mostly on pain as a deterrent. Unlike a Taser, it may not incapacitate an individual, however.
Taser
If to incapacitate your attacker, you want to work from a distance with your self-defense weapon, you may want to go with a Taser. They are legal in many areas, easy to carry, simple to use, and quickly deployed.
Make Your Body a Weapon
Rather than using a weapon that you hold in your hands, you can make your hands a weapon (and your feet, depending on which self-defense method you go with). Consider enrolling in a self-defense course, many of which are likely available in your area.
