Generally speaking, there's a long list of things that make one gun demand a higher price than another – even though they may seem extremely similar. The value of a gun can be determined by a handful of factors. First, let's look at those.

What Determines the Value of a Gun?

A number of factors are used to help determine how much a gun is valued. Here are some of them:

• Fear that the gun may soon be, or already be, discontinued.
• Going rate – what is the actual price of the gun compared to other guns that should be priced similarly?
• Aesthetic appeal.
• How rare is the gun?
• Is the gun recognized historically?
• Rate the shape the gun is in compared to its original condition.
• Brand recognition.
• What about accessories, embellishments, or special-order features?

Depreciation

You may have heard that the moment you drive a new car off the lot, it depreciates in value by some 9 to 11%. Much the same can be said for a firearm. When you purchase a firearm, it depreciates 15 to 25%, generally speaking. For about the next 15 years, however, the value will stay relatively consistent. Guns that are easily available to the public don't hold their value very well. They’re just too common. Choice firearms, on the other hand, may hold their value exceptionally well.

An Extremely Vague and General Estimate

It is impossible to put one exact price on AR-15s in general. So, here are some scenarios and average prices you might see:

• Roughly $850 for your standard AR-15 (mid-tier)
• $2000 and up for a top-of-the-line model
• $700 for a budget version

Just because an AR-15 is classified as a budget model doesn't make it a bad firearm. What's more, with the right accessories and equipment, you can usually modify these into better rifles.

As with expensive cars, the most customizable of the three versions above are high-quality AR-15s. In fact, upon purchase, you may be able to specify magazine capacity, caliber, barrel length, and other traits.

Then there is the option of purchasing a tactical kit or package, which includes accessories and desirable options in addition to the firearm. If you're planning on buying accessories, consider the available kits and packages.
