Generally speaking, the types of firearms belonging to the AR platform are many – seemingly endless, in fact. When it comes to types of AR-15 rifles, however, you’re a bit more limited. There are AR-15 pistols as well, which vary from AR-15 rifles in two main aspects: Whether or not you shoulder the firearm and its overall length.

If you’re considering the purchase of an AR-15 rifle, you’ll want to know a little bit about it first. Let’s look at some AR-15 rifle features and various types of AR-15s.

The AR-15 Rifle

Any semi-automatic, lightweight rifle similar to or based on the design of a Colt AR-15 is an AR-15-style rifle. In 1959, Colt Manufacturing Company bought the trademarks and patents to the Armalite AR-15 and AR-10. In 1977, most AR-15 patents expired, leading numerous manufacturers to produce Colt AR-15 copies under different names. The AR-15 name trademark, however, is retained by Colt.

In the United States, this type of firearm became the “most vilified and most loved rifle” as of 2010. The National Rifle Association refers to it as “America’s Rifle.”

Contrary to some beliefs, “AR” is not an abbreviation of “assault rifle.” It does not mean “automatic rifle,” either. It simply refers to the original manufacturer of the weapon, Armalite Rifle.

Types of AR-15 Rifles

As suggested, many companies have jumped on the AR-15-style rifle manufacturing bandwagon. Here, however, are some of the most popular choices:

AR-15 Pistols

In addition to AR-15 rifles, there are also AR-15 pistols. These aren’t the kind of pistols you see people carrying around in a holster, in their waistband, in a purse, in a glove compartment, etc. These are on a larger level and come with some type of stabilizing mechanism. The mechanism is not specifically designed to be shouldered, but it’s not unheard of. That does, however, change the legality of the weapon.

There are numerous types of AR-15 pistols, but here are six of the most popular:
